DNP Printer Paper Jam: How to Clear It in 5 Minutes and Stop It Coming Back

A DNP printer paper jam almost never means a broken printer, and clearing one takes about five minutes: power off, open the printer, remove the ribbon, pull the paper out slowly along its normal path, trim the damaged section square, reload, power back on. This guide gives you the exact clearing steps for the DS-RX1HS, DS620A and DS820A first, then the five causes behind most jams, when a jam really does mean hardware, and the habits that stop it happening at 9pm with a queue of guests.

Clear the jam first: the five minute procedure

This is DNP's own procedure, condensed from the DS-RX1/RX1HS and DS620 manuals. It is the same idea on all three printers, only the way you open them differs.

  1. Switch the printer off (or to Standby). You will power cycle at the end anyway, and it keeps fingers safe around the cutter.
  2. Open the printer. On the DS-RX1HS, release the open lever and swing the front cover down. On the DS620A and DS820A, release the opening lever and slide the mechanism unit out like a drawer.
  3. Remove the ribbon cassette and set it aside somewhere clean. You need it out of the way to reach the paper path.
  4. Pull the jammed paper out slowly, in the direction it normally travels. Never yank it backwards against the feed path and never force it, too much force can damage the rollers. No scissors, screwdrivers or anything sharp inside the machine.
  5. Cut off the wrinkled or partly printed section with scissors, square and clean. This step matters more than it looks: a ragged or angled leading edge is the number one way a cleared jam becomes a second jam.
  6. Clear out every scrap. Check around the cutter for trimmings and torn pieces. On the DS620A and DS820A, empty the scrap box while you are in there.
  7. Reseat the paper roll and ribbon exactly as you would on a fresh load, then close up.
  8. Power cycle: switch to Standby, then back On. This clears the error state and returns the cutter blade to its home position. The printer will feed and cut a few blank sheets as it re-initializes, on the DS620A it ejects five. That is normal, not a new fault.

If the paper is torn deep inside and gentle pulling will not free it, stop. Forcing it is how a five minute fix becomes a service job. That one goes to your dealer or DNP support.

Why it jammed: the five usual causes

Misloaded media. The single most common cause, and it clusters right after a rushed mid-event media change. The roll goes in slightly skewed, the leading edge feeds at an angle, and the printer jams within the first few prints. The fix is boring: reload calmly and let the printer run its full initialization.

A snapped or wrinkled ribbon. The ribbon and paper move together, so a ribbon that snaps or bunches takes the paper with it. Booth operators have a standard field fix: overlap the two torn ends, join them with a small piece of tape, wind the take-up side a few turns so the taped section is past the print head, and reseat. You lose a couple of prints and keep the event alive.

Scraps around the cutter. Every 2x6 strip cut and every trimmed edge produces slivers of paper. DNP's own cutter jam guidance points at exactly this: scraps building up around the cutting mechanism, most often because the scrap box is full. A jam that always happens at the moment of the cut is this cause until proven otherwise.

Humidity curl. Dye-sub paper absorbs moisture, and paper that has sat unsealed in a humid room curls harder and catches on the way out. Outdoor events and tropical venues make this worse. Keep media in its sealed bag until you load it.

Cut position and media mismatch. If the driver thinks it has 4x6 media but the printer holds 6x8, or your print size does not match the loaded roll, cuts land in the wrong place and the paper path chokes. Check the driver's media setting against what is physically loaded before blaming the machine.

When it is actually hardware

A paper jam is a symptom. Most of the time the disease is one of the five above, and the cure is your own two hands. It is time to suspect hardware when:

  • The jam repeats in the same spot after a careful reload with fresh media and a clean paper path. Worn or dirty feed rollers grip unevenly and steer the paper crooked no matter how well you load it.
  • The printer misreads its own state. Media errors with a correctly loaded roll point at dirty or failing paper sensors. Sometimes a wipe during cleaning fixes it, sometimes the sensor is done.
  • The cutter sounds wrong. Grinding or repeated cut attempts after you have cleared every scrap suggest the cutter mechanism itself, and a blade that no longer parks in its home position even after a power cycle is a service item, not an operator fix.

Rollers, sensors and cutters are dealer-service territory on these printers. The honest math for a working booth: get a repair quote, weigh it against the printer's age, and remember that a second-hand backup printer that keeps you booking events often beats an expensive repair on a tired one. Preventing jams on booth duty

A jam at home is an annoyance. A jam mid-event is a line of guests watching you sweat. Prevention is mostly habit:

  • Load media like it matters, because it does. Most jams are born in the thirty rushed seconds of a media change. Slow down, seat the roll straight, run the full initialization.
  • Clear scraps every media change. Empty the scrap box on the DS620A and DS820A, brush out the cutter area on the RX1HS. It takes one minute per 700 prints on an RX1HS roll, or per 400 on a DS620A roll of 4x6.
  • Store media sealed, cool and dry. Keep rolls in their packaging until loading, out of direct sun, away from the humid corner of the storeroom.
  • Think twice about third-party media. Compatible paper and ribbon exist and cost less. They also sit outside the tension and coating tolerances the printer was tuned for, and wrinkled ribbons and mid-roll jams are the usual way you find that out. On a booth that earns money per print, genuine media is cheap insurance, that is our honest read, not a rule.
  • Give the printer clean power. A DS-RX1HS pulls up to 3.9 A at low line voltage, heaviest exactly while printing, so a voltage sag mid-print can abort a sheet and leave media misaligned for the next one. Can I pull jammed paper backwards out of a DNP printer?
No. DNP's manuals say to pull jammed paper slowly in the direction it normally travels through the printer. Pulling backwards against the feed path, or forcing it, can damage the rollers and turn a five minute fix into a dealer repair.
Why does my DNP printer eject blank sheets after I reload media?
