If a Canon camera just threw an error mid-event, do this first: turn the camera off, pull the battery, wait ten seconds, reinsert it, and power back on. That is Canon's own first aid for Err 30, Err 70, Err 80 and Err 99, and it takes about thirty seconds to try, and is often the whole fix. Why photo booths hit these errors more than photographers do
A booth runs a camera outside its comfort zone: hours of continuous live view, tethered over USB, often inside an enclosed shell that traps heat, firing hundreds of frames per event. That duty cycle is exactly the condition Canon's error history points at. Canon issued an official service notice for the EOS 70D generation tying Err 70 and Err 80 to a circuit-board fault that surfaced with high internal temperature during prolonged use, and owner threads on Canon's own forums and DPReview describe Err 70 appearing during long live-view sessions on bodies from the Rebel era up to current R-series models. In other words, the errors below are not exotic. They are what heat, hours and mileage look like on a rear LCD.
That also means most of them are manageable. The playbook per code follows, cheapest fix first.
Err 70 and Err 80: the internal electronic errors
Symptom. Shooting stops, live view may freeze or go black, and the screen shows "Err 70: An error prevented shooting" (or Err 80, its close sibling covering shooting and playback). On a booth this often lands mid-session, after the camera has been live for an hour or more.
Most likely cause. An internal software or electronics fault. Canon's guidance treats both codes the same way: power-cycle and reseat the battery. The documented pattern behind repeat cases is heat and prolonged use, per the EOS 70D-generation service notice, and Canon still maintains a dedicated support article for resolving Err 70 on current EOS R series bodies.
Fixes, cheapest first.
- Power off, remove the battery, wait ten seconds, reinsert, power on. This is Canon's official first step and usually the whole fix.
- Remove and reseat the lens and the memory card too, powered off. Either can be the component the self-check tripped on.
- Let the body cool. If the booth shell is enclosed, open it up for ten minutes. Heat is the documented aggravator for this code family.
- Check the firmware version against Canon's support page for the model. Canon has fixed specific Err 70 triggers in past firmware releases, so a body that is versions behind is leaving a free fix on the table. Do not expect firmware to cure a hardware fault, though; Canon forum guidance is explicit that a persistent Err 70 usually has a hardware cause underneath.
When it means hardware death. One Err 70 at hour three of a wedding is an incident. Err 70 every event, or several times per event, is a failing board, and that is a service ticket, not a settings problem. On affected 70D bodies it was covered by Canon's service notice; on anything else, weigh the repair quote against a used replacement body before shipping it.
Prevention on booth duty. Ventilate the shell so the camera is not baking behind the front panel, give the body a deliberate power-cycle during natural breaks at long events, and keep firmware current in the off-season, not the night before a booking.
Err 99: the code that means "something"
Symptom. "Err 99: Shooting is not possible", most common on older Rebel-era bodies, sometimes on the first frame of the day, sometimes randomly mid-event.
Most likely cause. Err 99 is Canon's catch-all: a non-specific code raised when the camera's self-check finds a malfunction it has no dedicated number for. Lensrentals' long-running teardown of the code, written from experience across hundreds of Canon bodies, lists dirty lens contacts, lens electronics, a failing shutter, a weak battery and a bad card among the real causes. The code does not tell you which. Isolation does.
Fixes, cheapest first.
- The battery pull, as above.
- Remove the lens and clean the gold contacts on both lens and body with a clean, dry microfiber cloth, then remount.
- Remove the memory card, try a different known-good card.
- Swap to a second lens if one is available. If Err 99 disappears, the lens is the patient, not the camera. Booth setups mostly run one kit lens forever, which is why this step gets skipped and the wrong component gets replaced.
- Try a charged, genuine battery. Voltage sag can trip the self-check.
When it means hardware death. If Err 99 survives all five steps, on a Rebel-class body the usual suspects are the shutter or the main board, and on a $250 to $350 used body most repair quotes will not be worth it. See the economics under Err 30 below.
Prevention on booth duty. Contact cleaning twice a season, genuine batteries or a quality dummy-battery adapter, and a spare card in the kit bag. Cheap insurance, all of it.
Err 30: the shutter is done, or nearly
Symptom. "Err 30: Shooting is not possible", often preceded by nothing at all. Repair forums are full of Rebel-series owners meeting it mid-shoot on high-mileage bodies.
Most likely cause. Err 30 is Canon's shutter-malfunction code, mechanical or electrical. On a booth camera it usually arrives on schedule: entry Rebels carry a commonly cited shutter rating of around 100,000 actuations, and a busy booth fires 300 to 500 frames per event. Do that arithmetic on an ex-studio body bought used and Err 30 stops being a surprise.
Fixes, cheapest first.
- The battery pull. A one-off Err 30 can be a transient fault, and Canon's first aid is the same as for the other codes.
- Remove the lens and check nothing is physically obstructing the shutter curtains. Look, do not touch; shutter blades do not forgive fingers.
- That is the list. There is no contact to clean and no card to swap that fixes a worn shutter.
When it means hardware death. A returning Err 30 is a shutter replacement, which means a full teardown of the camera. At least one owner reports Canon quoting around $190 plus shipping just to evaluate and repair an entry Rebel, against $250 to $350 for another used body with a fresh count. Err 30 is not a repair decision, it is a retirement notice. Move the strap to the spare and part out the old body.

Err 01: camera and lens have stopped talking
Symptom. "Err 01: Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts." The rare error code that names its own fix.
Most likely cause. Dirty or oxidized electrical contacts between lens and body, a lens not fully locked into the mount, or, less often, a genuinely faulty lens. Booth cameras that never change lenses build up film on contacts nobody has seen in a year.
Fixes, cheapest first.
- Power off, remove the lens, remount it firmly until it clicks. A half-seated lens after transport throws exactly this.
- Clean the gold contacts on lens and body with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Avoid liquids; Canon's own guidance for this code is contact cleaning, not solvents.
- Test with a second lens or a second body if either is on hand, to establish which side is at fault.
- Inspect for bent or damaged contact pins. Damaged pins are a repair, not a cleaning.
When it means hardware death. Almost never for the camera. A persistent Err 01 after cleaning and cross-testing usually means the lens's electronics are failing, and a replacement 18-55mm kit lens costs less used than most repair evaluations.
Prevention on booth duty. Wipe the contacts when the kit gets its seasonal clean, and remount the lens as part of the setup checklist after every transport.
Err 02 and Err 04: card trouble
Symptom. "Err 02: Card cannot be accessed. Reinsert/change the card or format the card with the camera." Err 04 is the simpler cousin: the card is full.
Most likely cause. A poorly seated card, a card the body does not support, a write-lock tab flipped in transit, or corrupted data on the card. On tethered booth setups the card matters less than photographers assume, since images travel over USB, but many bodies still refuse to shoot at all with an unreadable card in the slot.
Fixes, cheapest first.
- Power off, remove the card, check the lock tab on its side, reinsert until it clicks.
- Swap in a known-good card. If the error clears, retire the old card; cards are consumables.
- Format the card in the camera, not in a computer, so the body lays down the file system it expects. The camera's own error text says as much. Formatting erases the card, so confirm anything on it has already transferred.
- For Err 04, delete or offload images, or format after transfer. Thirty seconds of housekeeping.
When it means hardware death. If multiple known-good cards all fail in one body, the card slot or its board is the fault, and that is a service estimate against replacement-body math like everything else here.
Prevention on booth duty. Format the card in-camera at the start of every event, carry one spare card per body, and buy cards from real retailers; counterfeit cards fail without ceremony.
