Venue power kills more booth equipment than drops, spills and jams combined, and the full defense stack costs less than one camera body. A decent surge strip is $20 to $40, a line-interactive UPS is $70 to $200, and the strongest protection of all, unplugging before a storm, is free. We build photo booth software and run our own booths, and I have lost cameras more than once to lightning strikes near venues and to venue electricity that looked fine right up until it wasn't. This guide covers how bad power actually destroys gear, what each layer of protection does and does not stop, and the checklist to run before every event.

How bad power actually kills cameras, printers and PCs
Surges and spikes. A surge is a brief jump above normal voltage, from grid switching, big motors kicking in, or lightning somewhere on the line. Your camera's adapter, your printer's board and your PC's power supply all clamp small surges daily. A big one punches through the power supply first, and sometimes through the mainboard behind it. The gear does not always die on the spot. Half-damaged components fail weeks later, mid-event, and you never connect it back to the surge that caused it.
Sags and brownouts. The opposite problem, and the sneakier one. When voltage drops, electronics pull more current to deliver the same power, and that extra current turns into heat inside power supplies and motor windings. Capacitors run elevated ripple current, regulators run out of spec, and everything ages faster. A dye-sub printer is the most exposed booth item: a DNP DS-RX1HS pulls up to 3.9 A at low line voltage, heaviest exactly while printing, so a sag mid-print means an aborted sheet at best. Worse, the damage often lands when the sag ends: voltage snaps back with a spike, and that recovery spike is what actually kills boards. Nearby lightning. Lightning does not need to hit the building. A strike on lines or a transformer down the street sends a surge through the grid into everything plugged in, and it can ride in on data lines too, not just power. The National Weather Service puts it plainly: a typical surge protector will do little if lightning strikes. That means the storm rolling in during teardown is a real business decision, not background weather.
Generator power. Outdoor weddings run on generators, and a conventional generator produces rough power: total harmonic distortion commonly around 9 to 10 percent and worse under changing load, plus voltage and frequency drift every time the caterer's equipment cycles. Sensitive electronics want under roughly 5 percent. Hours on dirty power will not always kill gear that night. It cooks power supplies slowly, and they fail later, on your busiest weekend.
The protection stack, cheapest first
1. A real surge protector strip ($20 to $40, 2026 range). Not a plain power strip, a surge protector with a joule rating printed on it. Two numbers matter. Joules, 1,000 to 2,000 or more, is a lifetime budget: every surge absorbed uses some up, and the strip keeps passing power after the protection is spent, so replace it after any big event storm and every couple of years. The let-through rating (UL 1449, commonly 330 V to 600 V) is how much voltage still reaches your gear, lower is better. What it does not do: nothing against sags, nothing against brownouts, and nothing without a properly grounded outlet, because the strip diverts surge energy into the ground wire.
2. A voltage stabilizer / AVR. A standalone automatic voltage regulator holds output near nominal when the line runs low or high for minutes at a time. Useful at venues with chronically weak power, common in much of Asia, less so in US retail because the next item includes one. What it does not do: no battery bridging, and it is not a surge arrestor.
3. A line-interactive UPS ($70 to $200 for 600 to 1500 VA, 2026 range). The workhorse. Its autotransformer boosts sags and bucks swells without touching the battery, and the battery bridges outages long enough to finish the print, save the session and shut down clean. This is the single best value upgrade for a booth: printer aborts, PC crashes and camera resets from flickers mostly disappear. What it does not do: regulation is loose compared to an online unit, and on generator power many line-interactive units click in and out constantly because the frequency drifts.
4. An online double-conversion UPS (from ~$300 for 1 kVA). It rebuilds power continuously, AC to DC to AC, so the output is clean no matter what comes in: sags, spikes, noise, frequency drift, all of it. Zero transfer time. This is the only topology that fully isolates your gear, and it is the correct answer if you regularly work generator-powered outdoor events and cannot control the generator.
5. For outdoor events: an inverter generator. If you supply your own power, an inverter generator (typically under 3 percent THD) is the clean option. If the venue supplies a conventional generator, put the online UPS between it and your gear.
6. For storms: the plug in your hand. Nothing consumer-grade survives a very close strike, not the $40 strip, not the $500 UPS. The only surge protector rated for a direct hit is an unplugged cable. When the storm is close enough to hear, finish the session, pull the plugs from the wall, and let the DJ make announcements for twenty minutes. Unplugging costs you nothing, and it is the only protection on this list with no failure mode. Gear that is switched off but still plugged in dies just the same.
The venue power checklist
Run this at setup, it takes five minutes:
- Test the outlet before trusting it. A three-light receptacle tester costs about $10 and instantly shows open ground or reversed wiring. An ungrounded outlet silently disables your surge strip.
- Ask what shares your circuit. The classic booth killer is sharing a breaker with the DJ's amp rack or the caterer's warmers. Every bass drop or coffee urn cycle becomes your sag. Ask for a dedicated outlet, banquet staff usually know exactly which ones are safe.
- Bring your own cords, and bring them thick. 12 AWG for anything up to 15 m (50 ft); on runs toward 30 m (100 ft) go 10 AWG, because a thin cord at length can drop 5 percent of your voltage before it reaches the printer. No daisy-chained strips.
- Total your load. Camera, printer, PC, screen and lighting for a typical DSLR booth land around 300 to 800 W, peaking when the printer heats. One healthy 15 A circuit is plenty. A shared, sagging one is not.
- Interrogate the generator. Inverter or conventional? Who else is on it? If it is a conventional unit shared with catering, run your online UPS or politely decline the outlet and find house power.
- Have a storm rule. Decide in advance: lightning within earshot means cameras unplugged. Print the rule for your crew so nobody negotiates with a client mid-storm.
- Watch for the flicker. Lights dimming when the AC kicks in is the venue telling you what your printer will experience all night.
